The National Key Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics (NKLPMG) was approved for its organization in 1986, founded in 1988, and officially open to other laboratories since 1989. Presently, the laboratory director is Professor Hong-Wei Xue, and the chairman of academic board is Professor Zhi-Hong Xu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Currently, there are four Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), twenty-seven research group leaders, including fifteen being honored as 100 Talents Programme of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and six being honored as Distinguished Young Scholars by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. NKLPMG has an active and energetic research team. In a planned and selective way, it has brought in a batch of outstanding young scientists in the fields of plant molecular physiology and functional genomics. These recruited young scientists have successfully established their laboratories, and begun to play important roles in the forefront of scientific research.

The main research interests of NKLPMG focus on plant functional genomics, plant molecular physiology and plant development, and plant biotechnology and genetic engineering. NKLPMG has established several technological platforms such as functional genomics, cell biology, proteomics and metabolomics. Moreover, it plays an important role in national scientific research programs. It has been undertaking key research projects from the National 863 Program, 973 Program, the National Plant Transgenic Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. Since 2006, NKLPMG has made great progress in the research of high-yield rice genes, plant signal conduction and plant mRNA, which have been published in the journals such as Nature Genetics, Nature Biotechnology, PNAS, Plant Cell, Development, Plant Journal, Plant Physiology, etc.

NKLPMG has close contacts and collaborations with both domestic and internationl scientific institutions. It has established thCAS-Max-Planck-Society Partner Group on Plant Molecular Physiology and Signal Transduction, the SIBS-UC(Berkeley) Molecular Life Science Center, the joint center with Penn State University and Shanghai Jiaotong University, the SIBS-ETH Shanghai Center for Cassava Biotechnology(SCCB), and the SIBS-KEYGENE Joint Lab for Plant Molecular Breeding, etc.

NKLPMG will continue to work hard to make groundbreaking contributions to plant and agricultural sciences and to become an internationally well-known laboratory.
